Prysmian Group leverages BendBright-XS success by standardizing on Draka bend insensitive technology across its access portfolio for telecom applications

ECOC Booth 1042,  Geneva, September 19, 2011 – Draka, part of the Prysmian Group, world leader in the energy and telecom cables and systems industry, today announces that year-to-date shipments for its flagship bend-insensitive fibre BendBright-XS doubled again during 2011, bringing the cumulated output of BendBright-XS to over 5 million kilometres since its introduction in 2006. With this continuing surge in demand, Draka bend-friendly fibre continues to impose itself as the fibre of choice for FTTH end-to-end deployment, offering measurable technological, economic and environmental benefits.

Capitalizing on the solutions from both current fibre portfolios, the Prysmian Group will standardise on the innovative design concept of BendBright-Technology for optical fibres for its access portfolio and for Telecoms and Datacoms applications which require the critical advantages of bend immunity.

“Market recognition for BendBright-Technology for bend immunity is reflected in this strong ongoing market demand for BendBright-XS which once again remains at a steady growth level, “says Alain Bertaina, Product Marketing, Single-mode Fibre, the Prysmian Group “ The acceptance of BendBright-XS as the Prysmian de-facto standard in fast growth telecoms access is a significant step forward in creating the most consistent solution portfolio for access networks leveraging the added value of industry-leading bend-insensitive performance required for demanding infrastructure environments.”

Leveraging the outstanding performance and versatility of the Draka PCVD fibre manufacturing process, BendBright Technology protects the integrity of light inside the fibre core, essential in critical data transmission situations when regular fibres may experience significant leakage resulting in data losses. Draka fibres have the flexibility to be pushed, pulled, bent, branched, and handled in ways that allow easy manipulation for installation, without degradation to the transmission signal.

BendBright Technology is integrated within the most powerful fibre suite on the market. The suite comprises BendBright-XS and BendBright-XS 200µm single-mode fibres for FTTH, BendBright-Elite ultra bend-insensitive fibre for extreme-indoor and optimized-footprint applications, MaxCap-BB-OM3/OM4 for high capacity bend-insensitive multimode fibres. Draka brand bend-friendly fibres provide orders of magnitude improvements resulting in lower macro- and micro-bending features.

Draka introduced the BendBright family of bend insensitive fibres in 2002 and has since expanded the product family to four versions of bend insensitive fibre, spanning both single-mode and multimode types.

Ongoing developments in BendBright Technology extend the application of bend-friendly fibres to an expanding range of industries and applications through the use of a simple, robust all-solid Single-Trench-Assisted Fibre profile. As early as 2006, Draka  BendBright-XS was compliant with both G.657.B and G.652.D ITU-T recommendations, and is now available as G.657.A2 of the latest ITU-T G.657 recommendation version.
