Cooperation agreement involves consulting, licensing and training for DrakaXSNet FTTH Software Suite for planning and expanding high performance fiber telecoms services in the community of Biberach

Amsterdam,  March 23, 2011 – Draka Communications, a global leader in the cabling and optical fiber industry today announces a European consulting, licensing and training contract with e.wa riss Netze, a fiber services venture jointly owned by the public utility of the city of Biberach together with EnBW, an energy provider for southwest Germany. Through this cooperation, e.wa riss Networks will benefit from Draka’s FTTH expertise, together with the use of the DrakaXSNet FTTH Software Suite in the evolution of its existing high speed fiber network serving the citizens of Biberach.

"We are now implementing new, cost-effective development processes to support  the planning, expansion and documentation  of our fiber network," said Michael Preiss, CEO of  e.wa riss Netze GmbH." In Draka we have found an innovative partner with a wealth of knowledge to bring to our fiber network projects."

Following research and comparison studies involving various planning software solutions, e.wa riss Netze concluded DrakaXSNet to be the best, most flexible option and a valuable asset for cost efficiency when constructing FTTx networks. Draka’s intelligent software allows network builders identify an optimal network solution, enabling total cost of ownership reductions during the network construction phase. The two partners worked closely together during a test phase with DrakaXSNet, resulting in a completely new approach to the development of its broadband network, offering more effective planning.

“This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to Biberach’s community fiber network development, as well as being an excellent reference for other local authority projects around Europe, says Edgar Aker, Director Marketing & Product Management, Draka Communications Telecom Solutions, EMEA. “We appreciate that e.wa riss Netze selected Draka as a key partner and adviser to further develop their network potential and are enjoying working with them.”

Together with network planning company E9, e.wa riss Netze began building the fiber infrastructure for their ewacom branded fiber services in Biberach. Services began in January 2010, today offering key business areas and residents of Biberach attractive triple play service packages with flat rate options from € 39,90 to

€ 69,90 and speeds of 50 Mb/s up to 150 Mb/s.

Located on the river Riss in south western Germany, Biberach has a population of 32,000 and is a significant industrial location within the area. The regional utility and energy companies realized that building a high performance broadband infrastructure would be an important pillar for the development of the community, ensuring a high level of universal services for businesses and citizens. In 2009, e.wa riss Netze GmbH was set up as a 50% joint venture between the utility companies, focusing on the essential activities of a distribution network provider - managing the installation/construction, development and the marketing of power and gas grids. The optical fiber network has now become an important division of e.wa riss Netze.
