Direct Buried Outside Plant Solution: Connecting with RetractaNetXS

RetractaNetXS is an outdoor direct buried solution that employs specially manufactured retractable cable from the Optical Distribution Point splice closure to the customer premises.

The RetractaNetXS Solution for OSP applications employs a breakthrough direct buried RetractaCable that is filled with smaller fiber modules. These modules are designed to be cut at one point in the network and retracted to another where they can be fed or blown through microducts directly to the customer premises. This offers a number of benefits:

  • Simple concept reduces the need for skilled labor
  • Ideal for existing neighborhoods – “overbuild”
  • Extremely efficient in greenfield sites

Extra cost efficiency

RetractaNetXS can be applied broadly, from underground to near surface and open conduit installations. Compared with traditional P2P network solutions, RetractaNetXS cuts total costs significantly, resulting in a 7%-9% reduction in the overall cost of the OSP network deployment.

RetractaNetXS connectivity components

Underground Closures – Splice-protection closures are typically connected by feeder cables coming from the Central Office or Point-of-Presence (PoP).  Closures can be direct buried or placed within a handhole and are designed to accommodate the appropriate number of splices for a particular network. The splice closure is the starting point for the RetractaCable to be laid in trenches that run near the customer premises and needs to be accessible for future maintenance. Other direct buried closure products are available on request.

Underground Tapping Boxes  The RetractaNetXS underground tapping box branches off the retracted fiber cable and provides and entry point for future access to the RetractaCable. This direct buried closure protects the opening in the RetractaCable and manages any over-length of the smaller retracted module.

Single EaseNet Microducts – The direct buried microducts used in the RetractaNet deployment are part of the EaseNetXS family of microducts. This thick walled product can be direct buried and offers a protective and convenient solution to push or blow the retracted fiber the last bit of the distance from the trench to the customer premises. Single EaseNet Microducts are available in several size and color stripe options.

The peninsula Qatar is rich in oil and gas and intends to become a role model for economic progress in the region. One example is the construction of Energy City Qatar, aspiring to be ‘the world’s most technologically advanced development of its kind’. And who did the initiators call on to design, engineer and implement an advanced fiber optic network? Draka, indeed.
In spite of the wireless-hype, wire and cable continue to play a crucial role in making triple-play applications possible. The technical solution that guarantees top speeds is glass fiber. Fiber-to-the-Home (FttH) brings this superfast data highway right into the home and business. This is already the case in about 10 percent of Amsterdam, thanks to a partnership between Draka and Citynet.
