Draka’s solution for installation on medium and high-voltage lines utilizes All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) cable – a universal solution for a large variety of applications. With a capacity of more than 144 fibers, ADSS cables are a good way to equip medium and high-voltage lines with optical fibers.
Excellent strength-to-weight
ADSS cables contain no metallic elements and the fibers are placed in several stranded loose plastic tubes which are covered by one or two plastic jackets. To make the ADSS cable self-supporting, it contains strength elements made of aramid yarns. The excellent strength-to-weight ratio of this material ensures the low weight of ADSS and limits additional loads on towers. By adapting the aramid content, spans of 800 to 1,000 meters are possible.
For installation on high-voltage lines, where dry-band arcing is a risk, special sheathing material and software to calculate optimum placement on the towers enable the use of ADSS for line voltages of up to about 275 kV.
