Draka’s Alternative Right of Way Solutions cover sewers, gas lines, micro-trenching, subways and tunnels. Each solution has been designed for a specific situation, ensuring easy deployment and long-term durability.
Sewers
Sewers offer an extensive, ready-made system for the rapid deployment of Outside Plant networks. Draka offers cable, conduits, installation and connectivity hardware designed to withstand extreme sewer conditions, and a unique installation technique using small, specialized robots for those areas that are too small for people to enter.
Ex-urban gas pipelines
National and regional gas pipelines provide an ideal pathway for telecommunication backbones. Often, the cable route can be run parallel to the gas pipeline, so reducing additional civil works to the minimum.
Urban gas distribution networks
These are often ideal for metropolitan and access networks. In this case, optical cable is installed inside the gas line. Draka’s unique solution is to lay optical cable in sections between valves, so establishing a potential access point. Our solution is fully compatible with a gas environment and does not affect the operation and maintenance of the gas system.
Micro-Trenching
This quick and simple way to create instant, low-cost optical fiber networks is unique to Draka. The three step process consists of creating a shallow groove in the asphalt, laying the cable or microducts into this groove, and then sealing it. The typical laying rate is about 10 km per day, with minimal traffic disruption and waste removal. This installation method can save up to 75% of traditional cable laying cost.
Subways and Tunnels
Like sewers, subway networks and tunnels provide a ready-made infrastructure for the installation of optical fiber networks. Draka offers a superior cable solution based on the use of the highest performance materials together with an optimized cable structure. Draka’s flame-retardant cables for sewers and tunnels can be installed along the tunnel wall, or in a cable duct.
