Commerzbank-Arena makes TV cabling permanent
Football (soccer) rules in the Commerzbank-Arena in Frankfurt am Main. During the World Cup 2006, it was one of the twelve German stadiums, accommodating up to 55,000 fans. Events in a stadium of this size are increasingly being televised and projected on big screens. In the run-up to the World Cup, the Arena was completely redesigned, including new state-of-the-art TV infrastructure. Draka had a big part in this, supplying almost 70 km of future-proof studio cable.
At the beginning of the new millennium and in time for the World Cup, the Commerzbank-Arena was to be thoroughly revamped. Modern technology would have to be brought in, including sophisticated TV studios and a 30-ton video cube suspended over the centre of the pitch.
Permanent
It is still quite common to use temporary cabling for the camera and transmission technology. This means the cables are put in before the event and removed again afterwards. The stadium management however decided to have permanent cabling installed. A total of 192 termination points were to be linked to a central TV compound. The installation had to meet both strict fire protection regulations and stringent technical television standards, including suitability for HDTV. The cabling concept included five different cable types. This made it possible to cover the entire spectrum of possible transmission alternatives and guaranteed a reliable and future-proof solution.
First-class cables
The stadium management awarded the media cabling contract to Elektro Ehinger GmbH. This specialized company offered cables manufactured by Draka. These were carefully examined to check if they met the high standards and specifications. Elektro Ehinger however proved right to trust in Draka: “We were sure that Draka not only manufactures first-class cables at a favourable price, but also that the company could be relied on to supply them within the tight timeframe.” Mission accomplished!
