DrakaXSNet PoP solution is now compatible with sophisticated automation software to facilitate project management and define the optimum space/customer connection ratio
Amsterdam, February 2, 2011 – Draka Communications, a global leader in the cabling and optical fiber industry today announces that its industry accepted DrakaXSNet PoP Solution is now compatible with the company’s expanding software suite of design and planning tools. Integrating PoP production into the workflow process adds the capability of conceptual designs that help optimize the location of a Point of Presence in a city or region. Used in the planning stages of the network this can benefit customers by producing scenario and cost-comparison analyses to identify and define the optimum space/customer connection ratio of a PoP, as well as facilitating the project management phase of deployment.
Introduced in 2008, Draka’s drop-in PoPs offer the highest flexibility and ultimate network stability to meet the needs of urban FTTH installations. DrakaXSNet PoP Solution can be pre-planned and inserted into FTTH infrastructures, provide a secure facility that literally ‘drops-in’ in to a high density fiber network serving a local community of customers. Housing servers, routers, ATM switches and digital and analog call aggregators, pre-fabricated PoPs help telecom and network service providers achieve an optimum PoP cost/connection ratio for densely populated urban areas.
With the integration of pre-fabricated PoPs, Draka now automates the entire process of FTTH deployment to cover every phase of access network implementation from PoP (Point of Presence) or Central Office through to Indoor Networks and final connections to the consumer.
Flexible alternatives
Prefab PoPs were originally developed at the request of customers in the Netherlands as a flexible alternative to basement installations within large apartment blocks, because as a compact stand-alone unit they offer a higher degree of security. Each Area PoP is delivered with Uninterruptable Power Supplies, air conditioning and pre-wired racks to service 2880 customers. Constructed from pre-stressed, pre-armored concrete manufactured to DIN specifications, the PoPs follow a standardized assembly process and are transported to an appropriate location to be lowered by crane into a 1 metre deep hole ( with driven concrete poles for stability). They come in 2 sizes, the AP ( Area PoP) has a footprint of 15 square metres and weighs about 25 tonnes. The CP (City PoP) feeds the Area PoPs, has a footprint of 27 square metres and weighs around 40 tonnes.
Interior pre-assembly prior to delivery is simplified and accelerated while also ensuring a high level of quality and uniformity as well as allowing a broad choice of a range of configurations. Draka's Optical Distribution Frames, a key part of pre-installation, form a robust, modular passive system which simplifies the installation of active modules and allows easy patching of the CATV, voice and data services required for each home.
Draka's PoP customization program is performed in close partnership with network builders, operators and owners to fine-tune each PoP to its location, right down to creating specifications matching passive and active equipment. Once the specification is finalized the PoP structure and its components are assembled in a controlled environment then shipped by road.
